The Shakers’ Physic Garden of Remedies

The Shakers are credited with establishing the first herbal medicine industry in the US in 1820.
The Watervliet Shakers’ herbal medicine industry began in 1827 with about 140 products and grew to almost 300 items by 1860. Our herb garden has 150 plants, all of which are labeled according to their uses by the Shakers. This tour will introduce a bit of history about this innovative industry and shed new light on both the ornamentals and weeds in your garden.
