Shaker Cemetery Tours
October 18, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
While the identical markers of the 445 graves reflect the egalitarian values of the Shaker community, the stories of the individuals buried here are quite varied.
Modest by design, Shaker cemeteries are the resting place of some of the most innovative, creative, and radical figures of the 18th and 19th century. Mother Ann Lee and other Shaker leaders are buried at the cemetery, which was established in 1785.
This special October tour led by Shaker Heritage staff engages visitors to explore the Shaker Cemetery and uncover the stories of this unique religious and social movement, recognized as the most successful communal society in the US. A walk beginning at the Church Family site will review the history of the Watervliet Shaker community and end at the cemetery where we will discuss some of the remarkable people who endeavored to create a “heaven on earth” as part of the communal society.
Two tours are scheduled for October 18th and 22nd.
The tour is free for SHS members and $10 for the general public. Pre-registration is appreciated.
You can sign up at educator@shakerheritage.org, by calling 518-456-7890, x3, or at the Shaker Heritage Museum Gift Shop. You can also register via Eventbrite.
