Day of Dance

The event begins with a keynote address entitled Can’t You Sing and Dance A Little? Shaker Marches, Dances and Motioning Songs by renowned Shaker music and dance scholar, Mary Ann Haagen from 1pm-2pm. The lecture explores the Shakers’ use of movement to generate and sustain spiritual energy in worship.
This will be followed by a Shaker dance workshop from 2:15pm-3:15pm led by Dr. K. Michelle Arthur, Education Coordinator, SHS. The workshop will include a variety of styles of songs and dances that span the nearly 250-year history of Shaker dance.
At 3:30pm, Melanie Axel-Lute will lead a presentation about the influence of Shaker music & dance on modern music & dance. The presentation will include two world premieres of dances by English Dancing Master Colin Hume.
The event is capped off by a participatory English Country Dance from 6:30pm-9pm with caller Melanie Axel-Lute, and music by Spare Parts (Bill Matthiesen, Liz Stell, and Eric Buddington).
