SUMMARY:Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage\, instead\, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful. \nJoin Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi in this crowd favorite! This workshop will be led by local Art Therapist Tara DeLuca. \nDuring the workshop you will connect with your bowl\, break it\, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by glueing them back together. \nThe bowl will be changed forever\, just as each person is through their own personal experiences. \nThis is a calming\, shared experience. It is an excellent way to participate in self care. \n“Instead of masking the flaws\, a Japanese way of seeing things is that by highlighting the cracks\, the piece becomes stronger\, more beautiful\, and easier to use.” \nAll materials are included! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Needle Felted Mushroom Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Work with local artist Mallory Zondag and learn how to sculpt with wool through that art of needle felting. During this three-hour workshop you will learn how to work with wire to create an armature\, how to cover it with wool\, how to use the tools to form the wool into some fantastic fungi and finally how to mix and blend colors to bring your wooly mushroom to life! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite! \nAbout the artist: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. Her experience with textiles while in art school led her to create both independent and community sculpture through a variety of fiber art mediums. She explores deeply personal and connective universal stories through the meditative and hands-on practices of wet felting\, weaving\, sculpting\, and stitching\, seeking to bring the ephemeral into physical being. The growth and decay of the natural world\, the duality of discomfort and attraction we feel towards it\, and humanity’s place within this dichotomy informs her dimensional textures and sculptural pieces.

SUMMARY:Manifestations: A Shaker Ghost Tour
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, eight Shakers fled England\, bound for New York in hopes of finding religious freedom. Named for their trembling “religious ecstasies\,” the Shakers received gifts of revelation; communications from the spirit world. Led by a woman whom they called\, “Mother Ann”\, they were subject to bloody persecution. Shakers were beaten\, imprisoned\, abducted\, and chased out of town on both sides of the Atlantic. Undeterred\, they persevered to build their vision of Heaven-on-Earth right here\, in Albany. We invite you to join us as we pull back the veil separating this world from the next at America’s First Shaker Settlement. \nPlease register online at Eventbrite! \n*This ghost tour touches on sensitive topics including sickness\, mental illness\, suicide\, physical abuse\, religious persecution\, and death\, both of children and of adults. If these topics hit too close to home\, we hope that you will take good care and join us for a regular tour another time.

SUMMARY:There Are NO Black Shakers
DESCRIPTION:There Are NO Black Shakers is a contemporary folk opera re-interpreting traditional Shaker hymns to tell the story of Prime Lane\, a free Black man who joined the Shaker Society in Albany in 1802. Nine years later he renounced the faith\, attempting to take his family with him. When his daughters Betty and Phebe elected to stay in the covenant as Shaker sisters\, Prime sued the Shakers. Not for custody of his daughters\, but for theft of his property. [Born to a formerly enslaved woman whose freedom he bought\, Prime could argue that the Shakers were holding his slaves.]\n\nThere Are NO Black Shakers gives voice to the silent history of the painfully gradual abolition of slavery of African Americans in New York State that\, while resisted by many Abolitionist groups like the Shakers\, remains invisible in the dominant historical narrative.\n\nWritten by Jean-Marc Superville Sovak\, and under the musical direction of award-winning violinist Gwen Laster\, There Are NO Black Shakers includes bassist Damon Banks\, guitarist Patrick Jones\, percussionist Todd Isler and the vocal talent of Aviva Jaye\, Cleo Reed and Lawrence Street.\n\nPlease purchase tickets online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Bleecker Consort Presents: Medieval Sampler & 14th-15th Century Music with Trio Tramontana
DESCRIPTION:Ever hear of a Dulcian\, Shawm\, Cornamuse\, Crumhorn\, Sackbut\, Dulcimer\, or viola da Gamba? \nThese are some of the instruments that will bring the great acoustics of the historic 1848 Meeting House to life during a performance by the Bleecker Consort. The Albany-based group is an early music consort formed in 1988 which specializes in medieval and renaissance music. \nThe variety of instruments played add to the range of musical selections from the Medieval times to the 15th century. The concert will also feature special guests\, Trio Tramontana. While you may have heard renaissance music through madrigals\, the exoticism of medieval music is a delight to the ear. \nConsort members come from a number of professional backgrounds that are as varied as the array of instruments they play: medicine\, music\, university teaching\, library sciences\, astronomy\, biology\, business\, biotechnology\, and instrument repair. You’ll find yourself caught up in their enthusiasm. \nPlease register online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold.
