SUMMARY:Mini Forest Floor Weaving Class
DESCRIPTION:Join local fiber artist Mallory Zondag and learn the art of tapestry weaving during this 2 hour workshop. Using a mini frame loom and a variety of yarns and fibers such as wool roving\, silk\, and wool locks\, you will learn how to weave patterns and textures to evoke the mossy magic of the forest floor\, all set up on a wooden box frame so your weaving is ready to hang at the end of the session. The workshop will cover four different weaving techniques to bring your moss textile to life! \nAll Materials Included! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite! \nMore about Mallory: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. Her experience with textiles while in art school led her to create both independent and community sculpture through a variety of fiber art mediums. She explores deeply personal and connective universal stories through the meditative and hands-on practices of wet felting\, weaving\, sculpting\, and stitching\, seeking to bring the ephemeral into physical being. The growth and decay of the natural world\, the duality of discomfort and attraction we feel towards it\, and humanity’s place within this dichotomy informs her dimensional textures and sculptural pieces.

SUMMARY:Walking with the Wicks
DESCRIPTION:The Shakers are a Utopian society whose beliefs of gender and racial equality date back to the late 1700’s. Join us while we explore America’s 1st Shaker settlement through the eyes of one family\, the Wicks. Some members stayed with the Shakers for the rest of their lives and undertook a variety of work for the community\, some played important roles during the spiritual revival known as the Era of Manifestations\, and others left for various reasons. Your tour guide is Ann Sayers\, longtime Shaker Heritage Society volunteer and author of Their Name is Wicks. \nPlease purchase your tickets online at Eventbrite. \n*Tour will cover approximately half a mile on some uneven terrain\, with little to no incline. \nMore about Ann Sayers: \nAs a longtime volunteer with Shaker Heritage Society\, Ann has grown a deep interest in the history of the Watervliet “Believers\,” as the Shakers called themselves. In the classic tradition of groups such as the Bill Evans Trio and Oscar Peterson Trio\, The Art D’echo Trio displays musicianship exciting to both life-long jazz fans and audience members unfamiliar with the genre. Whether playing sophisticated\, hard-swinging classic jazz arrangements or grooving on a Latin jazz tune\, the interplay between three master musicians defines the group. David Gleason (piano) and Mike Lawrence (bass) have performed together since they were teenagers; Pete Sweeney (drums) and David Gleason began playing jazz together around the year 2000. By 2004 these three musicians had formed the rhythm section for a variety of local jazz groups including\, at times\, the rhythm section for the Latin jazz ensemble Sensemaya. In 2012\, after realizing they were consistently called upon to form the core of many other groups\, they established their own trio dedicated to music in the style of the great historic jazz piano trios. In the last few years they have been invited to play a variety or clubs\, festivals and concerts as they continue to provide the foundation for many other ensembles. They have also appeared as the centerpiece of a “Jazzy Christmas\,” a concert performance which features the music of the Vince Gauraldi. The trio’s first album will be released in 2025. \nAbout the artists: \nDavid Gleason\, is a music educator\, pianist and composer living in New York’s Capital Region. He received an M.A. from Tufts University where he studied ethnomusicology and composition. He has researched folk and popular music in Puerto Rico and Cuba and is a contributing ethnomusicologist to the Museo Del Barrio’s permanent collection online. SUMMARY:Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage\, instead\, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful. \nJoin Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi in this crowd favorite! This workshop will be led by local Art Therapist Tara DeLuca. \nDuring the workshop you will connect with your bowl\, break it\, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by glueing them back together. \nThe bowl will be changed forever\, just as each person is through their own personal experiences. \nThis is a calming\, shared experience. It is an excellent way to participate in self care. \n“Instead of masking the flaws\, a Japanese way of seeing things is that by highlighting the cracks\, the piece becomes stronger\, more beautiful\, and easier to use.” \nAll materials are included! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Needle Felted Mushroom Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Work with local artist Mallory Zondag and learn how to sculpt with wool through that art of needle felting. During this three-hour workshop you will learn how to work with wire to create an armature\, how to cover it with wool\, how to use the tools to form the wool into some fantastic fungi and finally how to mix and blend colors to bring your wooly mushroom to life! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite! \nAbout the artist: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator.
