DESCRIPTION:The Erie Canal was one of the most impressive engineering feats in American history. It connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Midwest\, not only economically\, but spiritually as well. \nIt has been referred to as a “psychic highway\,” providing a means for the exchange of ideas. The suffrage and abolitionist movements were bolstered by this new connection. New religions were founded and an entire population was waiting to be converted. \nJoin author and historian Jack Kelly for a discussion and book signing of his newest book\, Heaven’s Ditch: God\, Gold\, and Murder on the Erie Canal. Books will be available for purchase at the event. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the beautiful upstate NY summer as you explore the booths of dozens of local and regional artisans on the grounds of the Shaker Heritage Society. A Family Activity Tent will offer games and activities for kids of all ages. Enjoy the sounds of live music\, explore the bountifully blooming heritage herb garden\, and learn about Shaker history and architecture with guided tours at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Fair food and pie will be available for purchase. \nThis event helps to support local businesses and a small non-for-profit. All proceeds from admission go toward to Society’s education and preservation programs. \n$4 per person/$3 with printed ad; SHS members\, active military/veterans\, children under 18 free \n10am-4pm

DESCRIPTION:They Built America is the third original play in a series highlighting the role of upstate New York in forging the history of America. The play tells the story of a young Irish immigrant named Kelly McPherson\, a teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy to work on the Erie Canal. Sourced from more than 35 historical records\, the characters in the play are based on real men\, women and children—politicians\, farmers\, merchants and laborers\, who came north to build the Erie Canal\, the miraculous waterway that transformed America into a great nation\, and made New York the Empire State. \nThis program is best suited to ages 8 and up. It is presented by Capital Repertory Theater. \nFree Admission\, sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Did you know the Shakers found themselves involved in New York State’s first legislative divorce in the early 19th century? \nWhen Eunice Chapman’s husband took their children and joined the Shakers\, she was left with few options. No one expected her to wage a very public battle for her freedom and custody of her children against her husband and the Shakers who harbored them. Learn about this fascinating and scandalous event that shocked New York State that began right here in Albany. Lauren Hunt\, Shaker Heritage Society board member and local lawyer\, will be on hand to answer questions about divorce law in New York State. \nParticipants will be able to send anonymous questions via text for this portion of the program.
