SUMMARY:Needle Felted Animals
DESCRIPTION:Join the talented fiber artist Mallory Zondag and learn how to sculpt with wool through the art of needle felting during this three hour workshop. You will gain skills in shaping and sculpting wool with the felting tools\, blending colors and creating facial features and other forms like wings and ears. Animal design can range from realistic to animated. Materials will be provided to turn your new friend into an ornament or leave it as a standing decoration! All materials are provided\, and no experience is necessary to participate! \nPlease purchase tickets online at Eventbrite! \nMore about Mallory: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. Her experience with textiles while in art school led her to create both independent and community sculpture through a variety of fiber art mediums. She explores deeply personal and connective universal stories through the meditative and hands-on practices of wet felting\, weaving\, sculpting\, and stitching\, seeking to bring the ephemeral into physical being. The growth and decay of the natural world\, the duality of discomfort and attraction we feel towards it\, and humanity’s place within this dichotomy informs her dimensional textures and sculptural pieces.

SUMMARY:Manifestations: A Shaker Ghost Tour
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, eight Shakers fled England\, bound for New York in hopes of finding religious freedom. Named for their trembling “religious ecstasies\,” the Shakers received gifts of revelation; communications from the spirit world. Led by a woman whom they called\, “Mother Ann”\, they were subject to bloody persecution. Shakers were beaten\, imprisoned\, abducted\, and chased out of town on both sides of the Atlantic. Undeterred\, they persevered to build their vision of Heaven-on-Earth right here\, in Albany. We invite you to join us as we pull back the veil separating this world from the next at America’s First Shaker Settlement. \nTours are on Oct. 17\, 18\, 19\, 24\, & 25 at 5:30pm. \n*This ghost tour touches on sensitive topics including sickness\, mental illness\, suicide\, physical abuse\, religious persecution\, and death\, both of children and of adults. If these topics hit too close to home\, we hope that you will take good care and join us for a regular tour another time \nTickets can be purchased online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage\, instead\, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful. \nJoin Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi in this crowd favorite! This workshop will be led by local Art Therapist Tara DeLuca. \nDuring the workshop you will connect with your bowl\, break it\, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by glueing them back together. \nThe bowl will be changed forever\, just as each person is through their own personal experiences. \nThis is a calming\, shared experience. It is an excellent way to participate in self-care. \n“Instead of masking the flaws\, a Japanese way of seeing things is that by highlighting the cracks\, the piece becomes stronger\, more beautiful\, and easier to use.” \nAll materials are included! \nYou may bring one piece of broken pottery to use in the workshop\, but we ask that you participate in the breaking and painting of the supplied bowl. \nPlease register online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Closing Reception - SKILLED Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This event marks the closing of “SKILLED\,” a photography exhibit featuring 24 framed photos of traditional tradespeople. A collaboration between photographer Tod Bryant and Ken Follett\, the exhibit is an exploration of the traditional building trades\, highlighting the intersection of tradition\, technology\, and community. The event is structured in two parts: a lecture followed by an interactive reception. \nThe evening will begin with a lecture by Ken Follett\, a Board Member of the Association of Preservation Technology Northeast. “From Sacred Labor to Peak Performance: Exploring Work\, Community\, and the Flow State.” The talk will explore how work\, when treated as a sacred and communal activity\, can lead to a “sharing of flow” among participants. Drawing insights from the Shakers and other historic communal societies\, Follett will discuss this collective state of peak performance and engagement. Following the lecture\, attendees will enjoy the closing reception for the exhibit. Guests can view the 24 photographs while enjoying refreshments. A unique feature of the reception will be an open conversation with both the photographer\, Tod Bryant\, and the tradespeople who are the subjects of the photographs. This session offers a special opportunity to gain deeper insight into their skilled work. \nTickets can be purchased here!

SUMMARY:Mini Forest Floor Weaving Class
DESCRIPTION:Join local fiber artist Mallory Zondag and learn the art of tapestry weaving during this 2 hour workshop. Using a mini frame loom and a variety of yarns and fibers such as wool roving\, silk\, and wool locks\, you will learn how to weave patterns and textures to evoke the mossy magic of the forest floor\, all set up on a wooden box frame so your weaving is ready to hang at the end of the session. The workshop will cover four different weaving techniques to bring your moss textile to life! \nAll Materials Included! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Walking with the Wicks
DESCRIPTION:The Shakers are a Utopian society whose beliefs of gender and racial equality date back to the late 1700’s. Join us while we explore America’s 1st Shaker settlement through the eyes of one family\, the Wicks. The stories of the Wicks family members reflect a wide range of experiences of those who sought refuge with the Shakers. Job and Polly Wicks and their 10 children arrived in the fall of 1824 and began a 70-year association with the Shakers. Some members stayed with the Shakers for the rest of their lives and undertook a variety of work for the community\, some played important roles during the spiritual revival known as the Era of Manifestations\, and others left for various reasons. Your tour guide is Ann Sayers\, longtime Shaker Heritage Society volunteer and author of Their Name is Wicks. \nPlease purchase your tickets online at Eventbrite. \n*Tour will cover approximately half a mile on some uneven terrain\, with little to no incline. \nMore about Ann Sayers: \nAs a longtime volunteer with Shaker Heritage Society\, Ann has grown a deep interest in the history of the Watervliet “Believers\,” as the Shakers called themselves.
