SUMMARY:Autumn Walk at Ann Lee Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “morning constitutional” to learn about the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve. It is a good time to see asters\, goldenrods\, and early fall color. You will also hear about the historic importance of the pond\, which the Shakers dredged in 1812 to provide water power for a mill. \nAnn Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve was designated in 1977 and named after Mother Ann Lee\, who founded America’s first Shaker settlement nearby in 1776. The Shakers dredged the pond in 1812 to provide water power for a mill. The Shakers also depended on the pond and its environs for fish\, a variety of medicinal plants\, and even ice that was harvested in the winter. The former Shaker Church Family site is now the location of the Shaker Heritage Society\, just 200 yards north of the pond. \nOur guide is Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist at the New York Natural Heritage Program. \n \nThe walk is 1.7 miles on flat terrain. DESCRIPTION:Bring your family for a safe and fun weekend featuring pony rides\, food\, live musicians\, and over 80 vendors at our beautiful site. \n\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to the Shaker Heritage Society for our Harvest Craft Fair!  \nTo make this event as safe as possible\, we have the following guidelines set in place: \nAll VENDOR BOOTHS will be OUTDOORS in the fresh air and sunshine. Vendors will be at least 6 feet apart\, and we ask you to do your part and maintain your social distance\, too. \nInside the Meeting House\, masks will be required for everyone regardless of vaccination status. Visitors and vendors are not required to wear masks outdoors unless unvaccinated and within 6 feet of another person. We will not require proof of vaccination upon arrival\, so please be honest and wear a mask if you are unvaccinated. \n\n\nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS \n\nLive Music: Saturday from 1-4 PM and Sunday from 10 AM -12 PM & 12:30-2:30 PM\nSaturday & Sunday: Pony Rides and Petting Zoo from 11 AM-1 PM\nSite Tours: On the Half Hour\, every hour\, 15-minute introduction to the Shakers followed by a longer tour for those interested. SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop with Julia Whitney Barnes
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make your own piece of cyanotype with multidisciplinary artist Julia Whitney Barnes! \nSometimes considered a printmaking technique\, sometimes a photographic technique\, artist/educator Julia Whitney Barnes approaches the medium of cyanotype as someone painting with light. She is interested in creating objects that feel both beautiful and mysterious. Each of her cyanotype paintings recall something familiar yet slightly outside of time. Given that sunlight starts the exposure process with cyanotype chemistry\, Julia carefully arranges elaborate compositions at night and utilizes long exposures under natural or UV light to create the final prints. She manipulates physical impressions of plants grown in her Hudson Valley garden and other nearby areas\, along with intricate negatives that are created as digital renderings or photographs printed in reverse onto transparencies. \nThis cyanotype workshop does not require any previous experience and will start with the basics of how to make a cyanotype print on paper and fabric. We will cover how to print using fresh and pressed plants\, printing with three-dimensional objects (string\, glass jars\, jewelry\, etc.)\, printing with paper cutouts and how to create and print with photographic negatives. This medium is infinite in ways to combine techniques during the creation of the print and after it has been printed. \nCyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process invented in 1842 by scientist and astronomer Sir John Hirschel\, which produces a cyan-blue print when a chemistry-coated surface is exposed to sunlight. It is also known as a sunprint\, photogram or blueprint. \nWorkshop will take place outside. SUMMARY:Hearth Basket Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Local weaver Sandy Salada will teach you how to create your own handsome Hearth Basket! \nThe Historical use of a Hearth Basket was used to carry fire wood or kindling and sits on or near the hearth. It also makes an ideal carrier for a 9×13 casserole or even two pies. Woven in natural reed with a sturdy oak handle. Finished basket measures 22” long 11” wide and 15” tall including the handle. \nUse of basket weaving tools will be provided. \nNo experience needed\, suitable for the adult beginner. \nThe workshop has been planned to allow for social distancing in the spacious Meeting Room\, with 8 participants each at a separate table around the room. Masks are required for all participants regardless of vaccination status. SUMMARY:Introduction to Needle Felted Painting
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever go to a fiber fest or farmers market and see unspun wool in gorgeous colors and wonder what you could do with them? Local artist Chris O’Connor will teach you how to “paint” with wool! \nUsing special needles to felt together colored wool fibers\, you will make a felted painting of a landscape\, indoor scene\, or still life. Students should bring a picture with them or photograph favorite views of the Shaker site before class to use as inspiration. The class will include information on how to display the finished piece. \nNo painting or drawing experience is necessary. The class is suitable for those 12 and older. \nParticipants will have use of Christine’s supplies which include: a foam mat used to cushion/support the work as it is needle felted; paper\, crayons\, and markers used to draft a preliminary design; and yarns\, curls\, silk ribbon\, and other goodies to use as detail and delight in the painting. \nThe workshop has been planned to allow for social distancing in the spacious Meeting Room\, with each participant at a separate table around the room. Masks will be required. SHS is following all protocols to maintain a safe environment for visitors. \n\n$50 per person for SHS Members and $55 for Non-Members\, plus a material fee of $15. SUMMARY:Nature Walk at Ann Lee Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “morning constitutional” and a chance to learn about the variety of plants at the historic Ann Lee Pond.  \nWe will identify some early spring wildflowers\, shrubs\, and trees on the woodland perimeter trail and along the edge of wetlands before taking the bridge across the pond back to the parking lot. You will also hear about the historic importance of the pond\, which the Shakers dredged to provide water power for a mill in 1812.  The walk will be led by Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist at the New York Natural Heritage Program with additional information from Lorraine Weiss\, Education Coordinator at Shaker Heritage Society. \nAnn Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve was designated in 1977 and named after Mother Ann Lee\, who founded America’s first Shaker settlement nearby in 1776. The Shakers depended on the pond and its environs not only for water power\, but also for fish\, a variety of medicinal plants\, and even ice that was harvested in the winter. DESCRIPTION:The appearance of the Asian Jumping Worm makes it harder to share plants\, but we can still share seeds. \nCornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Kathryn Adams Harter will discuss how to support our local ecosystem by saving and planting seeds from native plants. What are native plants\, why are they important in our home gardens\, how are seeds formed\, and why should we save native seeds? Kathy will show us the ropes and explain how to collect\, store\, and germinate perennial seeds. She will also cover winter seed sowing basics\, and the importance of milkweed and its specific germinating needs. \nNote that this is a very traditional activity on the Shaker Heritage site.  The Watervliet Shakers developed the process of packaging seeds in small envelopes for sale to the World beginning in the 1790s. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create a painting using colored sheep’s wool fibers and special barbed felting needles! \n\nDid you ever go to a fiber fest or farmers market and see unspun wool in gorgeous colors and wonder what you could do with them? Local artist Chris O’Connor will teach you how to “paint” with wool! Using special needles to felt together colored wool fibers\, you will make a felted painting of a landscape\, indoor scene\, or still life. \nStudents should bring a picture with them or photograph favorite views of the Shaker site before class to use as inspiration. The class will include information on how to display the finished piece. No painting or drawing experience is necessary. SUMMARY:Women’s Work – Shaker Style. Lecture at the Mabee Farm Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:Women played an important role in all aspects of this utopian\, egalitarian society\, serving as religious leaders\, dealing with business matters\, and shouldering responsibilities for running the everyday affairs. In addition to working on the seed and herb businesses\, the Sisters produced a variety of textiles and other items for the Shakers’ own needs and for sale to the World. \nLorraine Weiss\, Education Coordinator at the Shaker Heritage Society\, will present a program on what “women’s work” meant for the Shaker sisters. As reflected in the journals\, the Sisters’ craftsmanship evolved to respond to the changing economy and trends over the Shakers’ 162 years in Albany. \nTickets are $10 and free for SCHS members. DESCRIPTION:Save the date for our annual Fall fundraiser! \nThis annual event is a celebration of the site of America’s first Shaker Settlement\, and its purpose is threefold: to raise funds to protect the Shaker National Historic District from the threat of development\, to celebrate the Church Family Site as a community center\, and to honor our ever-growing corps of volunteers and supporters who see the potential of this site and lead the effort to preserve our local history. \nThis year we will  celebrate the release of Heritage Cooking with a festive picnic menu inspired by the community cookbook. \n \nEnjoy lunch\, sip local brews\, and hear insightful interviews facilitated by food journalist and Albany Cooking School owner Deanna Fox. \nWe’ll also be hosting a silent auction with a variety of items donated by our Craft Fair vendors. SUMMARY:Hands to Work Day
