SUMMARY:The Shakers: Farmers\, Stewards\, and Utopians
DESCRIPTION:A presentation for the Town of Colonie Sustainability Week Celebration \nArea residents may realize that there are roads\, schools\, and businesses that incorporate “Shaker” in their name. They may not realize that the Shakers are a Utopian society whose beliefs on gender and racial equality and communal living date to the 1700s\, and that their first American settlement was established in Colonie in 1776. The Shakers remained in Albany until 1938 and at one time owned or leased over 2500 acres in the region. \nThe Shakers’ agriculture soon formed the basis for several key industries which helped to broaden their economy. While they lived separately from the World (as they called non-Shakers)\, they participated in the larger agricultural community’s discussions about best practices. A presentation at the Shaker Heritage Society will introduce this remarkable community. \nThe presentation is a free event and will take place in the Meeting House at Shaker Heritage Society. The talk will last 45 minutes\, and participants are welcome to stay for an optional tour of the site afterwards. Bring a picnic lunch if desired. \nContact 518-456-7890\, x 3 or educator@shakerheritage.org  for more information. You may download the brochure here. \n  \nCategory: Lectures \n

SUMMARY:Online Lecture: Intersections and Singular Paths - An Introduction to Shaker Theology
DESCRIPTION:We describe the Shakers as a Christian sect that developed into a celibate\, pacifist communal group who seek salvation by living a pure life. Behind that apparently simple statement lie complicated questions (and answers) that were tested and modified over many years. \n \nWhat were believers seeking when they heard Mother Ann Lee’s millennial message? Why was celibacy crucial? Did they use the Hebrew Bible and/or the New Testament? How did they come to believe in the dual nature of God as both female and male? Why did they reject the Trinity? Were their views radical or traditional? How do their ideas challenge thoughtful seekers today? \nJane F. Crosthwaite\, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Mount Holyoke College\, will discuss (some of) the theological issues raised by the unique challenges of the Shaker vision. The talk will be presented online. \n  \nRegister online at Eventbrite.  To register offline\, contact educator@shakerheritage.org\, or call 518-456-7890\, x 3. \nThere is no fee for this event\, but donations would be appreciated: https://home.shakerheritage.org/donate-today. \n  \nJane Crosthwaite is interested in the roles of women in American religious history and Shaker history and art. Her research is primarily directed toward a study of the drawings produced by the Shaker sisters during the mid-nineteenth century period known as the Era of Manifestations. \nHer most recent publication is Shaker Visions of the Divine: Essays on their Sacred Art and Scripture (Richard Couper Press\, 2022).  Dr. Crosthwaite’s biographical entries for R. Mildred Barker and Hannah Cohoon are included in the American National Biography project (Oxford University Press)\, and her reviews and articles are frequently published in scholarly journals. \nShe has received a teaching award from Mount Holyoke\, inclusion in The Princeton Review’s 300 Outstanding Teachers\, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Wake Forest University\, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree\, from Queens University of Charlotte. \n  \nCategory: Online\, Lectures

SUMMARY:Save Your Own Garden Seeds Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the growing season! \nThis is the first of a two-part workshop\, the second session will involve a seed swap in the fall! \nThe appearance of the Asian Jumping Worm in our region makes it harder to share plants among gardeners these days\, but we can still share seeds.\nCornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Janet Given Chen\, Kathryn Adams Harter and Laura Lehtonen will discuss how to support our local ecosystem by saving and planting seeds from native plants. \nThe session will provide an overview of what native plants are\, their importance for home gardens\, how are seeds are formed\, and why we should save native seeds. Then we’ll get down to the nitty gritty of how to collect\, store\, and germinate perennial seeds\, including milkweed and its specific germinating needs. There will also be a brief introduction to winter seed sowing basics\, although the topic will be covered more thoroughly in the fall session (yet to be scheduled). You can view the flyer for the event here. \nNote that this is a very traditional activity on the Shaker Church Family site\, where the Watervliet Shakers developed the process of packaging seeds in small envelopes for sale to the World beginning in the 1790s. The program will include a brief introduction to the Shakers’ seed industry. The session will end with a stroll in the Shaker Heritage herb garden. \nThe workshop will take place in the Meeting House. \nSHS Members $5\, General Public $10 \nParticipants are not required to attend both the seed saving workshop and seed swap events. \nFor more information or to register offline\, contact educator@shakerheritage.org or call 518-456-7890\, x3. \nRegister online at Eventbrite. \n  \nCategory: Workshops

SUMMARY:Bleecker Consort in Concert at Shaker Heritage Society
DESCRIPTION:Chase away winter blues! This Bleecker Consort concert will travel through 300 years of music with instruments both unusual and familiar. \nEver hear of a Dulcian\, Shawm\, Cornamuse\, Crumhorn\, Sackbut\, Dulcimer\, or viola da Gamba? \nThese are some of the instruments that will bring the great acoustics of the historic 1848 Meeting House to life during a performance by the Bleecker Consort. The Albany-based group is an early music consort formed in 1988 which specializes in medieval and renaissance music. \nThe variety of instruments played add to the range of musical selections which date from the13th century through the high Renaissance of the late16th century. The concert will also feature vocal selections in several languages including Galician\, French and English. While you may have heard renaissance music through madrigals\, the exoticism of medieval music is a delight to the ear. \nConsort members come from a number of professional backgrounds that are as varied as the array of instruments they play: medicine\, music\, university teaching\, library sciences\, astronomy\, biology\, business\, biotechnology\, and instrument repair. You’ll find yourself caught up in their enthusiasm. \n\n\nTickets are $12 per person for SHS Members\, $15 for Non-Members\, and $8 for Students with ID. \nRegister online at Eventbrite or by contacting SHS staff at educator@shakerheritage.org or 518-456-7890\, x 3. \n\n\n  \nCategory: Music \n

SUMMARY:Autumn Walk at Ann Lee Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “morning constitutional” to learn about the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve. It is a good time to see asters\, goldenrods\, and early fall color. You will also hear about the historic importance of the pond\, which the Shakers dredged in 1812 to provide water power for a mill. \nAnn Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve was designated in 1977 and named after Mother Ann Lee\, who founded America’s first Shaker settlement nearby in 1776. The Shakers dredged the pond in 1812 to provide water power for a mill. The Shakers also depended on the pond and its environs for fish\, a variety of medicinal plants\, and even ice that was harvested in the winter. The former Shaker Church Family site is now the location of the Shaker Heritage Society\, just 200 yards north of the pond. \nOur guide is Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist at the New York Natural Heritage Program. \n \nThe walk is 1.7 miles on flat terrain. The walk is free (donations are welcome) and limited to 20 participants. \nPre-registration is appreciated.  You can sign up at educator@shakerheritage.org\, by calling  518-456-7890\, x3\, or at the Shaker Heritage Museum Gift Shop. \nYou can also register online at Eventbrite. \n  \nCategory: Tours \n

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop with Julia Whitney Barnes
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make your own piece of cyanotype with multidisciplinary artist Julia Whitney Barnes! \nSometimes considered a printmaking technique\, sometimes a photographic technique\, artist/educator Julia Whitney Barnes approaches the medium of cyanotype as someone painting with light. She is interested in creating objects that feel both beautiful and mysterious. Each of her cyanotype paintings recall something familiar yet slightly outside of time. Given that sunlight starts the exposure process with cyanotype chemistry\, Julia carefully arranges elaborate compositions at night and utilizes long exposures under natural or UV light to create the final prints. She manipulates physical impressions of plants grown in her Hudson Valley garden and other nearby areas\, along with intricate negatives that are created as digital renderings or photographs printed in reverse onto transparencies. \nThis cyanotype workshop does not require any previous experience and will start with the basics of how to make a cyanotype print on paper and fabric. We will cover how to print using fresh and pressed plants\, printing with three-dimensional objects (string\, glass jars\, jewelry\, etc.)\, printing with paper cutouts and how to create and print with photographic negatives. This medium is infinite in ways to combine techniques during the creation of the print and after it has been printed. \nCyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process invented in 1842 by scientist and astronomer Sir John Hirschel\, which produces a cyan-blue print when a chemistry-coated surface is exposed to sunlight. It is also known as a sunprint\, photogram or blueprint. \nWorkshop will take place outside. Masks are encouraged to be worn by all\, and will be required for participants who are unvaccinated. \n\n\n\nRegister online at Eventbrite. \n  \n\nCategory: Workshops

SUMMARY:Hearth Basket Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Local weaver Sandy Salada will teach you how to create your own handsome Hearth Basket! \nThe Historical use of a Hearth Basket was used to carry fire wood or kindling and sits on or near the hearth. It also makes an ideal carrier for a 9×13 casserole or even two pies. Woven in natural reed with a sturdy oak handle. Finished basket measures 22” long 11” wide and 15” tall including the handle. \nUse of basket weaving tools will be provided. \nNo experience needed\, suitable for the adult beginner. \nThe workshop has been planned to allow for social distancing in the spacious Meeting Room\, with 8 participants each at a separate table around the room. Masks are required for all participants regardless of vaccination status. SHS is following all protocols to maintain a safe environment for visitors. \nThere will be a 30 minute break for lunch – we suggest bringing your own\, but we can recommend local places that offer delivery/pickup upon request. \n\nRegister online at Eventbrite. \nIf you have any questions about the basket\, you can find Sandy’s contact information on her website at SandysFiberArts.com. \n\n  \nCategory: Workshops
