DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what type of tree you are looking at? Do you know a dogwood from a blueberry? Have a clue about just how many types of asters and goldenrod plants there are? \nJoin us for a walk\, or three walks\, and you’ll be able to tell a beech tree from a locust\, spot a honeysuckle at 10 paces\, and be wowed by the fact that there are asters – and then there are many other asters. \nYou don’t have to be any kind of plant expert to participate\, and sessions will be relaxed and supportive. Join us for walks around Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve (near the Albany Airport) during the spring and summer to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to correctly identifying plants. We will focus on ten common New York species\, look at actual specimens in the field\, and focus on the features that will help you distinguish one species from all others. (Chances are that we’ll probably mention a few other interesting plants along the way.) \nThis program is cosponsored by the Shaker Heritage Society and the New York Flora Association. Sessions will be led by Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist of the New York State Natural Heritage Program. The walks are free but limited to 10 people each. Come make cold pressed soap loaves with us but enjoy some wine while you do it! \nThe workshop will include a demonstration by Farm Momma herself followed by participants creating their own 4 bar loaf of soap that they color\, scent and design themselves. SUMMARY:The Shakers' Physic Garden of Remedies
DESCRIPTION:The Shakers are credited with establishing the first herbal medicine industry in the US in 1820. \nThe Watervliet Shakers’ herbal medicine industry began in 1827 with about 140 products and grew to almost 300 items by 1860. Our herb garden has 150 plants\, all of which are labeled according to their uses by the Shakers. This tour will introduce a bit of history about this innovative industry and shed new light on both the ornamentals and weeds in your garden. \nThis tour is FREE\, but RSVP’s are appreciated. SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop with Julia Whitney Barnes
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will start with the basics of how to make a cyanotype print from mixing chemistry\, coating paper and/or fabric and developing the print using the sun!  \nWe will cover how to print using fresh and pressed plants\, printing with three-dimensional objects (string\, plastic bags\, glass jars\, jewelry\, etc.)\, printing with paper cutouts and how to create and print with photographic negatives. We may also play with experimental techniques including wet cyanotype. This medium is infinite in ways to combine techniques during the creation of the print and after it has been printed. The workshop does not require any previous experience in cyanotype. \nAbout the Instructor: Sometimes considered a printmaking technique\, sometimes a photographic technique\, artist/educator Julia Whitney Barnes approaches the medium as someone painting with light. She is interested in creating objects that feel both beautiful and mysterious. Each of her cyanotype paintings recall something familiar yet slightly outside of time. Given that sunlight starts the exposure process with cyanotype chemistry\, she carefully arranges elaborate compositions at night and utilizes long exposures under natural or UV light to create the final prints. She manipulates physical impressions of plants grown in her Hudson Valley garden and other nearby areas\, along with intricate negatives that are created as digital renderings or photographs printed in reverse onto transparencies. \n \nJulia Whitney Barnes is an artist living in the Hudson Valley who works in a variety of media from cyanotypes\, watercolor\, oil paintings\, ceramic sculptures\, murals\, and site-specific installations. She has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. She was awarded fellowships from New York State Council on the Arts administered through Arts Mid-Hudson\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, Abbey Memorial Fund for Mural Painting/National Academy of Fine Arts\, and the Gowanus Public Art Initiative\, among others. \nBorn in Newbury\, VT\, Julia Whitney Barnes spent two decades in Brooklyn\, before moving to Poughkeepsie\, NY in 2015. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design and her MFA from Hunter College. Whitney Barnes has created site-specific installations at the Albany International Airport/Shaker Heritage Society\, Albany\, NY; Brookfield Place/Winter Garden\, New York\, NY; Arts Brookfield\, Brooklyn\, NY\, the Wilderstein Sculpture Biennial\, Rhinebeck\, NY; The Trolley Barn/Fall Kill Creative Works\, Poughkeepsie\, NY; GlenLily Grounds\, Newburgh\, NY; ArtsWestchester\, White Plains\, NY; Gowanus Public Arts Initiative\, Brooklyn\, NY; Space All Over/Fjellerup Bund i Bund & Grund\, Fjellerup\, Denmark; Lower Manhattan Cultural Council/Sirovitch Senior Center\, New York\, NY; Brooklyn School of Inquiry\, Brooklyn\, NY; New York City Department of Transportation\, New York\, NY; and Figment Sculpture Garden\, Governors Island\, NY and among other locations. \nWhat is Cyanotype?\nCyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process invented in 1842 by scientist and astronomer\, Sir John Hirschel\, which produces a cyan-blue print when a chemistry-coated surface is exposed to sunlight. It is also known as a sunprint\, photogram or blueprint. The first artist (who was also a botanist) to use it was Anna Atkins. She is cited as the very first female photographer (though made without the use of a camera) and her family was friends with William Henry Fox Talbot (credited with inventing photography) and Atkins learned techniques from him and then made her own path. She published a book Photographs of British Algae in 1843. SUMMARY:Walking in the Wicks' Footsteps - Tour of the Watervliet Shaker Site
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour and storytelling about a Shaker family that spanned the greater part of the 1800s at the Watervliet Shaker community. \nThe stories of the Wicks family members reflect a wide range of experiences of those who sought refuge with the Shakers. Job and Polly Wicks and their 10 children arrived in the fall of 1824 and began a 70-year association with the Shakers. Some members stayed with the Shakers for the rest of their lives and undertook a variety of work for the community\, some played important roles during the spiritual revival known as the Era of Manifestations\, and others left for various reasons. DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what type of tree you are looking at? Do you know a dogwood from a blueberry? Have a clue about just how many types of asters and goldenrod plants there are? \nJoin us for a walk\, or three walks\, and you’ll be able to tell a beech tree from a locust\, spot a honeysuckle at 10 paces\, and be wowed by the fact that there are asters – and then there are many other asters. \nYou don’t have to be any kind of plant expert to participate\, and sessions will be relaxed and supportive. Join us for walks around Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve (near the Albany Airport) during the spring and summer to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to correctly identifying plants. We will focus on ten common New York species\, look at actual specimens in the field\, and focus on the features that will help you distinguish one species from all others. DESCRIPTION:A presentation for the Town of Colonie Sustainability Week Celebration \nArea residents may realize that there are roads\, schools\, and businesses that incorporate “Shaker” in their name. They may not realize that the Shakers are a Utopian society whose beliefs on gender and racial equality and communal living date to the 1700s\, and that their first American settlement was established in Colonie in 1776. The Shakers remained in Albany until 1938 and at one time owned or leased over 2500 acres in the region. \nThe Shakers’ agriculture soon formed the basis for several key industries which helped to broaden their economy. While they lived separately from the World (as they called non-Shakers)\, they participated in the larger agricultural community’s discussions about best practices. A presentation at the Shaker Heritage Society will introduce this remarkable community. \nThe presentation is a free event and will take place in the Meeting House at Shaker Heritage Society. DESCRIPTION:We describe the Shakers as a Christian sect that developed into a celibate\, pacifist communal group who seek salvation by living a pure life. Behind that apparently simple statement lie complicated questions (and answers) that were tested and modified over many years.  \n \nWhat were believers seeking when they heard Mother Ann Lee’s millennial message? Why was celibacy crucial? Did they use the Hebrew Bible and/or the New Testament? How did they come to believe in the dual nature of God as both female and male? Why did they reject the Trinity? Were their views radical or traditional? How do their ideas challenge thoughtful seekers today? \nJane F. Crosthwaite\, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Mount Holyoke College\, will discuss (some of) the theological issues raised by the unique challenges of the Shaker vision.
