SUMMARY:Walking in the Wicks' Footsteps - Tour of the Watervliet Shaker Site
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour and storytelling about a Shaker family that spanned the greater part of the 1800s at the Watervliet Shaker community. \nThe stories of the Wicks family members reflect a wide range of experiences of those who sought refuge with the Shakers. Job and Polly Wicks and their 10 children arrived in the fall of 1824 and began a 70-year association with the Shakers. Some members stayed with the Shakers for the rest of their lives and undertook a variety of work for the community\, some played important roles during the spiritual revival known as the Era of Manifestations\, and others left for various reasons. SUMMARY:Learn 10 at the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve: Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what type of tree you are looking at? Do you know a dogwood from a blueberry? Have a clue about just how many types of asters and goldenrod plants there are? \nJoin us for a walk\, or three walks\, and you’ll be able to tell a beech tree from a locust\, spot a honeysuckle at 10 paces\, and be wowed by the fact that there are asters – and then there are many other asters. \nYou don’t have to be any kind of plant expert to participate\, and sessions will be relaxed and supportive. Join us for walks around Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve (near the Albany Airport) during the spring and summer to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to correctly identifying plants. We will focus on ten common New York species\, look at actual specimens in the field\, and focus on the features that will help you distinguish one species from all others. (Chances are that we’ll probably mention a few other interesting plants along the way.) \nThis program is cosponsored by the Shaker Heritage Society and the New York Flora Association. Sessions will be led by Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist of the New York State Natural Heritage Program. The walks are free but limited to 10 people each. SUMMARY:The Shakers: Farmers\, Stewards\, and Utopians
DESCRIPTION:A presentation for the Town of Colonie Sustainability Week Celebration \nArea residents may realize that there are roads\, schools\, and businesses that incorporate “Shaker” in their name. They may not realize that the Shakers are a Utopian society whose beliefs on gender and racial equality and communal living date to the 1700s\, and that their first American settlement was established in Colonie in 1776. The Shakers remained in Albany until 1938 and at one time owned or leased over 2500 acres in the region. \nThe Shakers’ agriculture soon formed the basis for several key industries which helped to broaden their economy. While they lived separately from the World (as they called non-Shakers)\, they participated in the larger agricultural community’s discussions about best practices. A presentation at the Shaker Heritage Society will introduce this remarkable community. \nThe presentation is a free event and will take place in the Meeting House at Shaker Heritage Society. The talk will last 45 minutes\, and participants are welcome to stay for an optional tour of the site afterwards. SUMMARY:Online Lecture: Intersections and Singular Paths - An Introduction to Shaker Theology
DESCRIPTION:We describe the Shakers as a Christian sect that developed into a celibate\, pacifist communal group who seek salvation by living a pure life. Behind that apparently simple statement lie complicated questions (and answers) that were tested and modified over many years.  \n \nWhat were believers seeking when they heard Mother Ann Lee’s millennial message? Why was celibacy crucial? Did they use the Hebrew Bible and/or the New Testament? How did they come to believe in the dual nature of God as both female and male? Why did they reject the Trinity? Were their views radical or traditional? How do their ideas challenge thoughtful seekers today? \nJane F. Crosthwaite\, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Mount Holyoke College\, will discuss (some of) the theological issues raised by the unique challenges of the Shaker vision. SUMMARY:Save Your Own Garden Seeds Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the growing season! \nThis is the first of a two-part workshop\, the second session will involve a seed swap in the fall! \nThe appearance of the Asian Jumping Worm in our region makes it harder to share plants among gardeners these days\, but we can still share seeds.\nCornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Janet Given Chen\, Kathryn Adams Harter and Laura Lehtonen will discuss how to support our local ecosystem by saving and planting seeds from native plants. \nThe session will provide an overview of what native plants are\, their importance for home gardens\, how are seeds are formed\, and why we should save native seeds. Then we’ll get down to the nitty gritty of how to collect\, store\, and germinate perennial seeds\, including milkweed and its specific germinating needs. There will also be a brief introduction to winter seed sowing basics\, although the topic will be covered more thoroughly in the fall session (yet to be scheduled). You can view the flyer for the event here. \nNote that this is a very traditional activity on the Shaker Church Family site\, where the Watervliet Shakers developed the process of packaging seeds in small envelopes for sale to the World beginning in the 1790s. The program will include a brief introduction to the Shakers’ seed industry. SUMMARY:Bleecker Consort in Concert at Shaker Heritage Society
DESCRIPTION:Chase away winter blues! This Bleecker Consort concert will travel through 300 years of music with instruments both unusual and familiar. \nEver hear of a Dulcian\, Shawm\, Cornamuse\, Crumhorn\, Sackbut\, Dulcimer\, or viola da Gamba? \nThese are some of the instruments that will bring the great acoustics of the historic 1848 Meeting House to life during a performance by the Bleecker Consort. The Albany-based group is an early music consort formed in 1988 which specializes in medieval and renaissance music. \nThe variety of instruments played add to the range of musical selections which date from the13th century through the high Renaissance of the late16th century. The concert will also feature vocal selections in several languages including Galician\, French and English. While you may have heard renaissance music through madrigals\, the exoticism of medieval music is a delight to the ear. \nConsort members come from a number of professional backgrounds that are as varied as the array of instruments they play: medicine\, music\, university teaching\, library sciences\, astronomy\, biology\, business\, biotechnology\, and instrument repair. Mother Ann Lee and other Shaker leaders are buried at the cemetery\, which was established in 1785. \nThis special October tour led by  Shaker Heritage staff engages visitors to explore the Shaker Cemetery and uncover the stories of this unique religious and social movement\, recognized as the most successful communal society in the US.  A walk beginning at the Church Family site will review the history of the Watervliet Shaker community and end at the cemetery where we will discuss some of the remarkable people who endeavored to create a “heaven on earth” as part of the communal society. \nTwo tours are scheduled for October 18th and 22nd. \nThe tour is free for SHS members and $10 for the general public. DESCRIPTION:Shaker Heritage Society and the Hudson-Mohawk Weavers’ Guild invite you to a free\, special event! \nDrop in during an open house to explore a wide range of traditional and modern approaches to weaving with exhibits\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities for adults and children\, including “make and take” projects.
