SUMMARY:Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage\, instead\, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful. \nJoin Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi for a unique workshop based on the ancient Japanese practice of Kintsugi. This workshop will be led by local Art Therapist Tara DeLuca. \nDuring the workshop you will connect with your bowl\, break it\, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by glueing them back together. \nThe bowl will be changed forever\, just as each person is through their own personal experiences. \nThis is a calming\, shared experience. SUMMARY:"Land\, Liberty\, and Loss" Reading and Discussion Program
DESCRIPTION:Guided by scholar Dr. Elana Krischer\, Shaker Heritage Society will host four book discussions this spring drawn from Humanities New York’s “Land\, Liberty\, and Loss” Reading and Discussion program. Through these texts we will explore the founding of New York and the United States through the lens of indigenous\, and in particular Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) history\, society\, politics\, and struggle for sovereignty. \nThe Shakers’ arrival in the New World in 1774 places them squarely at the center of the history and legacy of the American Revolution. While ardent pacifists and radically egalitarian\, the early Shakers can also be understood as the beneficiaries of the dispossession of indigenous nations: as 18th century immigrants to the New World\, tenant farmers\, and colonists eager to expand their settlements. From there you will take part in a simple cleansing ritual of the space\, that includes music and a guided meditation. Then we will create the self-empowerment spell jar! Each participant will create a spell jar with herbs and crystals\, that are infused with sigil magick. The sigil will be crafted in class\, so you will walk away knowing how to create your own! The workshop will be presented by Schenectady County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Janet Given Chen and Kathryn Adams Harter. \nBefore and after the presentation\, participants are welcome to bring seeds to swap with other gardeners. DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what type of tree you are looking at? Do you know a dogwood from a blueberry? Have a clue about just how many types of asters and goldenrod plants there are? \nJoin us for a walk\, or three walks\, and you’ll be able to tell a beech tree from a locust\, spot a honeysuckle at 10 paces\, and be wowed by the fact that there are asters – and then there are many other asters. \nYou don’t have to be any kind of plant expert to participate\, and sessions will be relaxed and supportive. Join us for walks around Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve (near the Albany Airport) during the spring and summer to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to correctly identifying plants. We will focus on ten common New York species\, look at actual specimens in the field\, and focus on the features that will help you distinguish one species from all others. (Chances are that we’ll probably mention a few other interesting plants along the way.) \nThis program is cosponsored by the Shaker Heritage Society and the New York Flora Association. Sessions will be led by Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist of the New York State Natural Heritage Program. The walks are free but limited to 10 people each.
