SUMMARY:Songs of Love and Freedom: The Music of Mother Ann Lee
DESCRIPTION:This year marks a once-in-a generation commemoration year for the Shaker Heritage Society; the 250th anniversary of the arrival of Ann Lee to the site they steward\, and the founding of the American Shaker movement there in 1776. To mark the occasion\, the Shaker Heritage Society will host a choral performance of Shaker music from the Revolutionary period and beyond\, researched and arranged by American composer Kevin Siegfried. Through song\, the performance will celebrate Ann Lee’s legacy as the founder of a movement dedicated to the Revolutionary ideal of liberty\, and deep commitment to pacifism\, human equality\, and community. \n\n\n\nAfter the concert\, Brother Arnold Hadd\, from the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community in New Gloucester\, Maine\, will appear as a special guest and virtual speaker during a Shaker-inspired communal meal by Navona Catering. \n\n$60 General / $50 Members: Includes 4pm concert and outdoor reception with refreshments and one drink ticket\n$130 General / $120 Members & Volunteers: Includes 4pm concert and outdoor reception with refreshments and one drink ticket PLUS full dinner experience with cash bar and virtual presentation with Brother Arnold Hadd\n\nThe event will be held on May 23\, 2026 at 4:00pm at the 1848 Meeting House at 25 Meeting House Road\, Albany\, NY\, 12211. \nTickets available online at Eventbrite! \nAbout Kevin Siegfried \nAs a composer and arranger deeply committed to the performance and preservation of early American music\, Kevin Siegfried has devoted much of his career to raising awareness of Shaker musical traditions. Choral arrangements from his “Shaker Harmony Collection” have been performed and recorded by choirs around the globe. “Lay Me Low\,” one of Siegfried’s most frequently performed Shaker arrangements\, was sung by The Joint Armed Forces Chorus at the State Funeral of President George H. W. Bush. In recent years\, Siegfried has undertaken extensive archival research at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine. This research has led to multiple collaborations with Brother Arnold Hadd\, who carries on the 250-year oral tradition of Shaker song. Collaborations have included concert performances at Sabbathday Lake\, a film for the American Folklife Center entitled “Shaker Spirituals in Maine\,” and the recording of two oral histories for the Library of Congress. In 2024\, Siegfried presented a “Community Sing” at the Library of Congress in acknowledgement of the 250th anniversary of the Shakers in North America. Since 2014\, he has served as composer-in-residence with the Capitol Hill Chorale in Washington\, DC. He teaches at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. SUMMARY:Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Break and paint your own bowl with gold using the ancient Japanese technique of Kintsugi.\n\nKintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back\, and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage\, instead\, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful.\n\n\n\nJoin Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi in this crowd favorite! This workshop will be led by local Art Therapist Tara DeLuca. \nDuring the workshop you will connect with your bowl\, break it\, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by glueing them back together. \nThe bowl will be changed forever\, just as each person is through their own personal experiences. \nThis is a calming\, shared experience. It is an excellent way to participate in self-care. \n“Instead of masking the flaws\, a Japanese way of seeing things is that by highlighting the cracks\, the piece becomes stronger\, more beautiful\, and easier to use.” \nAll materials are included! \nYou may bring one piece of broken pottery to use in the workshop\, but we ask that you participate in the breaking and painting of the supplied bowl. \nPlease register online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Nancy Donnelly & Trio Jazz Concert
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Donnelly will present a tribute to legendary jazz vocalists during Jazz Appreciation month. This afternoon concert is sponsored by the Music Performance Trust Fund in celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month throughout the Capital Region. Nancy will be joined by a stellar trio with John LeRoy on keyboard\, Erik Johnson on bass and Bob Halek on Drums. \n“Nancy Donnelly is an exciting singer whose voice is nestled nicely somewhere in between jazz and soul\, a rich\, warm and powerful sound” Peter Eldridge (New York Voices). \n\n“Jazz vocalist Nancy Donnelly is a taste of the old school of jazz\, when vocals counted for something. Her voice carries you off to the jazz and swing clubs of the 30’s and 40’s. Her voicing is mellow and smooth\, with the natural tones not found in this world taken over by smooth jazz and contemporary synthesized music”.- EPerry @ musicianreview.net\n\n\nTickets are FREE\, donations always appreciated! SUMMARY:Needle Felted Fungi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create your own adorable mushroom!\n\n\n\nWork with local artist Mallory Zondag and learn how to sculpt with wool through that art of needle felting. During this three hour workshop you will learn how to work with wire to create an armature\, how to cover it with wool\, how to use the tools to form the wool into some fantastic fungi and finally how to mix and blend colors to bring your wooly mushroom to life! \nPlease register online at Eventbrite! \nAbout the artist: \nMallory Zondag is a mixed-media fiber artist and artist educator. SUMMARY:Manifestations: A Shaker Ghost Tour
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, eight Shakers fled England\, bound for New York in hopes of finding religious freedom. Named for their trembling “religious ecstasies\,” the Shakers received gifts of revelation; communications from the spirit world. Led by a woman whom they called\, “Mother Ann”\, they were subject to bloody persecution. Shakers were beaten\, imprisoned\, abducted\, and chased out of town on both sides of the Atlantic. Undeterred\, they persevered to build their vision of Heaven-on-Earth right here\, in Albany. We invite you to join us as we pull back the veil separating this world from the next at America’s First Shaker Settlement. \nTours are on Oct. 17\, 18\, 19\, 24\, & 25 at 5:30pm. \n*This ghost tour touches on sensitive topics including sickness\, mental illness\, suicide\, physical abuse\, religious persecution\, and death\, both of children and of adults. If these topics hit too close to home\, we hope that you will take good care and join us for a regular tour another time \nTickets can be purchased online at Eventbrite!
