You will make a short handled broom with a finished smooth wooden handle and all natural broom corn. You will have your color choice of nylon string and a small bunch of either black or red broom corn to add a splash of color or mix into your broom. \nIn this workshop you will learn how to hand tie your broom to the handle\, then how to sew the broom together. This broom is a very handy size for sweeping front porches and staircases and cleaning around furniture and hearths. Children love them\, too. SUMMARY:Turkey Wing Kitchen Set Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join local broom maker Robin Ziegler in this 3-piece broom making workshop! \n\n\n\n\nIn this workshop you will use traditional broom-making techniques to make a three-piece kitchen set: a Turkey Wing Whisk Broom\, a Pot Scrubber\, and a Cake Tester. All of the items will be made with all-natural broom corn\, your choice of string and either a piece of broom corn seed\, or a piece of red dyed broom corn for decoration to weave into the broom. By making three items\, you will learn to start a broom three times so that you have the knowledge and practice to try it on your own! \nThe Turkey Wing Whisk Broom dates back well over 200 years when all you had were grasses\, twigs and string to fasten a broom together. This broom will use a low-sugar content of sorghum for broom making and a variety of strong nylon string. Your Turkey Wing broom will be great for cleaning car mats\, small rugs\, craft tables\, work benches and more. They are very functional\, make wonderful gifts and are lovely to display. \nThe pot or veggie scrubber can be used to clean stubborn pots OR dirty vegetables. The cake tester is an old-fashioned utensil with straws that you break off and insert into your cake to check for doneness. Participants will take a plain wood cutting/charcuterie board and bring it to the next level by painting a stunning dot mandala on the handle. Mandalas are an ancient art form characterized by symmetry and balance. Participants will be able to create a simplified rendition of the ancient mandalas with a more accessible method using dots of paint. Participants will be provided with everything they need: a detailed written instruction book they can keep to continue their artistic practice at home\, tools\, paint\, step-by-step group direction with individual assistance as necessary\, and an approximately 16”x8” wooden cutting/charcuterie board. DESCRIPTION:This year marks a once-in-a generation commemoration year for the Shaker Heritage Society; the 250th anniversary of the arrival of Ann Lee to the site they steward\, and the founding of the American Shaker movement there in 1776. To mark the occasion\, the Shaker Heritage Society will host a choral performance of Shaker music from the Revolutionary period and beyond\, researched and arranged by American composer Kevin Siegfried. Choral arrangements from his “Shaker Harmony Collection” have been performed and recorded by choirs around the globe. “Lay Me Low\,” one of Siegfried’s most frequently performed Shaker arrangements\, was sung by The Joint Armed Forces Chorus at the State Funeral of President George H. W. Bush. In recent years\, Siegfried has undertaken extensive archival research at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine. This research has led to multiple collaborations with Brother Arnold Hadd\, who carries on the 250-year oral tradition of Shaker song. Collaborations have included concert performances at Sabbathday Lake\, a film for the American Folklife Center entitled “Shaker Spirituals in Maine\,” and the recording of two oral histories for the Library of Congress. In 2024\, Siegfried presented a “Community Sing” at the Library of Congress in acknowledgement of the 250th anniversary of the Shakers in North America. Since 2014\, he has served as composer-in-residence with the Capitol Hill Chorale in Washington\, DC. He teaches at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. DESCRIPTION:Break and paint your own bowl with gold using the ancient Japanese technique of Kintsugi.\n\nKintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken\, rather than discarding the pieces\, the fragments are put back\, and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage\, instead\, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful.\n\n\n\nJoin Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi in this crowd favorite! DESCRIPTION:Vibraphonist\, Michael Benedict is the leader of JAZZ VIBES. His band plays jazz standards\, original compositions and Brazilian influenced jazz. \nMichael received a Bachelor’s degree in music education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Rutgers University. He has toured the United States extensively\, performing at numerous concert halls\, colleges\, clubs\, and festivals and has performed in Europe. In 2012\, Michael went on a US State Department tour of Tunisia\, Africa where he taught and performed with the Planet Arts Trio. \nMichael has released six recordings to date. His album\, CIRCULATION\, was an Editor’s pick in Downbeat Magazine and listed as one of the “Best Jazz Albums of 2015” by National Public Radio. Michael was twice nominated for “Jazz Musician of the Year” by the Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Awards (The Eddies). \nHis newest album\, “1-2-3 GO!”\, earned him the Local Hero Award for Best Local/Regional Release by J. Hunter\, a reviewer for www.nippertown.com.
