SUMMARY:Learn 10 at the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve: Trees
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what type of tree you are looking at? Do you know a dogwood from a blueberry? Have a clue about just how many types of asters and goldenrod plants there are? \nJoin us for a walk\, or three walks\, and you’ll be able to tell a beech tree from a locust\, spot a honeysuckle at 10 paces\, and be wowed by the fact that there are asters – and then there are many other asters. \nYou don’t have to be any kind of plant expert to participate\, and sessions will be relaxed and supportive. Join us for walks around Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve (near the Albany Airport) during the spring and summer to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to correctly identifying plants. SUMMARY:Shaker Cemetery Tours
DESCRIPTION:While the identical markers of the 445 graves reflect the egalitarian values of the Shaker community\, the stories of the individuals buried here are quite varied.   \nModest by design\, Shaker cemeteries are the resting place of some of the most innovative\, creative\, and radical figures of the 18th and 19th century. Mother Ann Lee and other Shaker leaders are buried at the cemetery\, which was established in 1785. \nThis special October tour led by  Shaker Heritage staff engages visitors to explore the Shaker Cemetery and uncover the stories of this unique religious and social movement\, recognized as the most successful communal society in the US.  A walk beginning at the Church Family site will review the history of the Watervliet Shaker community and end at the cemetery where we will discuss some of the remarkable people who endeavored to create a “heaven on earth” as part of the communal society. \nTwo tours are scheduled for October 18th and 22nd. \nThe tour is free for SHS members and $10 for the general public. Pre-registration is appreciated. \nYou can sign up at educator@shakerheritage.org\, by calling  518-456-7890\, x3\, or at the Shaker Heritage Museum Gift Shop. SUMMARY:Autumn Walk at Ann Lee Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “morning constitutional” to learn about the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve. It is a good time to see asters\, goldenrods\, and early fall color. You will also hear about the historic importance of the pond\, which the Shakers dredged in 1812 to provide water power for a mill. \nAnn Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve was designated in 1977 and named after Mother Ann Lee\, who founded America’s first Shaker settlement nearby in 1776. The Shakers dredged the pond in 1812 to provide water power for a mill. The Shakers also depended on the pond and its environs for fish\, a variety of medicinal plants\, and even ice that was harvested in the winter. The former Shaker Church Family site is now the location of the Shaker Heritage Society\, just 200 yards north of the pond. \nOur guide is Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist at the New York Natural Heritage Program. \n \nThe walk is 1.7 miles on flat terrain. The walk is free (donations are welcome) and limited to 20 participants. \nPre-registration is appreciated.  You can sign up at educator@shakerheritage.org\, by calling  518-456-7890\, x3\, or at the Shaker Heritage Museum Gift Shop. \nYou can also register online at Eventbrite. \n  \nCategory: Tours \n

SUMMARY:Nature Walk at Ann Lee Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “morning constitutional” and a chance to learn about the variety of plants at the historic Ann Lee Pond.  \nWe will identify some early spring wildflowers\, shrubs\, and trees on the woodland perimeter trail and along the edge of wetlands before taking the bridge across the pond back to the parking lot. You will also hear about the historic importance of the pond\, which the Shakers dredged to provide water power for a mill in 1812.  The walk will be led by Steve Young\, former Chief Botanist at the New York Natural Heritage Program with additional information from Lorraine Weiss\, Education Coordinator at Shaker Heritage Society. \nAnn Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve was designated in 1977 and named after Mother Ann Lee\, who founded America’s first Shaker settlement nearby in 1776. The Shakers depended on the pond and its environs not only for water power\, but also for fish\, a variety of medicinal plants\, and even ice that was harvested in the winter. The former Shaker Church Family site is now the location of the Shaker Heritage Society\, just 200 yards north of the pond. \nThe walk is 1.7 miles on flat terrain.  Park at either of the two lots and meet the group near the beginning of the board walk.  Rain date is Friday\, May 27th. \nContact educator@shakerheritage.org or call 518.456.7890\, x 3 with any questions. \nThe guided walk is free and is limited to 20 participants. Register online at Eventbrite  or via email at educator@shakerheritage.org. \n  \nCategory:  Tours

SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT - Ephemeral Spring Wildflowers – hosted by the Capital Region Native Plant Society
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with a Virtual Walk at Ann Lee Pond! \nSpring ephemeral wildflowers are native perennial woodland plants that sprout early each spring\, quickly bloom and seed before the canopy trees overhead leaf out. Once the forest floor is deep in shade\, the leaves wither away leaving just the roots\, rhizomes and bulbs underground. It allows them to take advantage of the full sunlight levels reaching the forest floor during early spring. \nDavid Behm (Curious By Nature) is inviting you to join him for a virtual walk  featuring the spring ephemeral wildflowers at Ann Lee Pond Nature and Historic Preserve in the Town of Colonie.  This online session will last around 45 minutes\, including an interactive discussion period immediately following the 30-minute presentation.  Be sure to grab your favorite beverage and a bag of popcorn before you get comfy prior to the presentation. \nJoin this Zoom meeting:  https://us04web.zoom.us/j/892459336 \nFollow the instructions on the page to join the virtual meeting. \nMeeting ID: 892 459 336 \nPlan to access the link above at least 10 minutes before the webinar starts! SUMMARY:Paranormal Investigation at Shaker Heritage Society
DESCRIPTION:While it may seem like an unusual pairing\, spiritualism was at the heart of the Shaker religion and experience. In fact\, the Era of Manifestations\, a pivotal moment in the Shakers’ history\, began in the late 1830s here in Watervliet when a group of teenage girls at the South Family began having visions and communicating with spirits. This phenomena spread to other Shaker communities and resulted in the production of well-known spirit drawings and thousands of songs and poems. The Shakers often relayed messages from the dead as “gifts” at worship or at events such as funerals. \nJoin the Empire State Paranormal Society for an exclusive paranormal investigation at the historic Shaker Site in Colonie.  Paranormal investigators from Empire State Paranormal Society and staff from Shaker Heritage Society will guide participants through several historic Shaker buildings. \nLearn the history of the souls who lived and died on the property\, and search for evidence of ghostly inhabitants! \nTickets available at Eventbrite \n
