SUMMARY:Manifestations: A Shaker Ghost Tour
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, eight Shakers fled England\, bound for New York in hopes of finding religious freedom. Named for their trembling “religious ecstasies\,” the Shakers received gifts of revelation; communications from the spirit world. Led by a woman whom they called\, “Mother Ann”\, they were subject to bloody persecution. Shakers were beaten\, imprisoned\, abducted\, and chased out of town on both sides of the Atlantic. Undeterred\, they persevered to build their vision of Heaven-on-Earth right here\, in Albany. We invite you to join us as we pull back the veil separating this world from the next at America’s First Shaker Settlement. \nTours are on Oct. 16\,17\,18 and 23\,24\,25 at 5:30pm. \n*This ghost tour touches on sensitive topics including sickness\, mental illness\, suicide\, physical abuse\, religious persecution\, and death\, both of children and of adults. If these topics hit too close to home\, we hope that you will take good care and join us for a regular tour another time \nTickets can be purchased online at Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:Tour of the Shakers Spiritual Landscape
DESCRIPTION:A surprising tour of local sites considered sacred by the Shakers. Driving tour led by Prof. Doug Winiarski of Univ. of Richmond. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Doug Winiarski\, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Richmond\, and Theresa Frey-Alexander\, Curator of Education and Interpretation at Shaker Heritage Society on a mind-bending driving tour of the “Spiritual City of Wisdom’s Valley\,” an ancient spirit metropolis located on the Watervliet Shaker Village. In 1842 Shaker instruments saw Wisdom’s Valley as an invisible walled city enclosing mammoth spirit trees\, glistening spiritual fountains\, soaring apartment buildings\, and luxuriant gardens and vineyards. Full of surprising revelations of Shaker beliefs and theology\, the tour will traverse a long-forgotten spiritual landscape that now sprawls across familiar locations\, including Albany International Airport\, Memory Gardens Cemetery\, and Shaker Ridge Country Club. The tour will begin at Shaker Heritage Society and proceed to caravan to various sites where we’ll congregate to listen to stories of Shaker spiritual life during the famed Era of Manifestations (1837–1850s). Carpooling encouraged! \nWiniarski is the editor of Shakers at the Center: Manifesting Spirits & Spectacles in Nineteenth-Century America (University of Massachusetts Press\, 2026). \nTickets available on Eventbrite.com!
